WILLIAM "BILL" WELDY Obituary

William O. "Bill" Weldy, 87, of Piqua, passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2026 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Ft. Myers, Florida. Bill was born February 11, 1938 in Piqua, the eldest child of the late Ned V. and Edith (Nies) Weldy. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Diane (Decker) Weldy, his son Joshua Jay Weldy, grandson, Gage Weldy, his sister and brother in law Linda & Jim Rench, and his brother, Michael Weldy.

Bill is survived by his wife, Pamela (Click) Weldy; his son, Matthew McKee Weldy; two step sons, Rob and Matthew Bost; seven grandchildren, Andrew Rohr, Haydon Weldy, Jacob (Brooke) Weldy, Tyler Weldy, and Ethan, Emma, and Braden Bost; and four great grandchildren, Kannon, Kingsten, Kallister, and Harper; also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Bill was born in Piqua, Ohio, lived for several years in Troy and graduated from Covington High School in 1957. After a very short stint as an aluminum siding salesman, Bill joined the Ohio Highway Patrol. After a year or so, Bill decided that this was not enough action, so in 1958 he applied to the Dayton Police Department where he served with great pride for 33 years. 17 years of Bill's service was spent teaching at the police academy. He specialized in Aikido which is known as the "Art of Peace".

In 1960 he married Diane Decker. In 1969 they welcomed Matthew into their home and Josh followed in 1973. Bill was a devoted husband and father. As a family they enjoyed traveling, camping, canoeing, backyard football and attending bluegrass festivals. Bill retired from the Dayton PD on a Friday, and began his teaching career at the Upper Valley JVS the following Monday. Bill had always wanted to be a teacher and thoroughly enjoyed working with young people. He taught Law Enforcement from 1991 to 2000. Bill's high school English teacher saw his potential and encouraged him to pursue this talent for writing. Over the years, he wrote articles for the FOP newsletter, the Dayton Daily News, he published five novels and one biography. He wrote songs for special occasions and obituaries for all his friends. He was an excellent story teller as his great nephews Dakota, Ashby, Avery, and Ayden will attest. They loved Uncle Bill stories.

Everyone knew that Bill loved music. He was a fan of the 50s doo-wop music that was so popular in his teen years, but his true love was bluegrass. He was a smooth rhythm guitarist and great addition to any jam. Bill said that his most humbling experience was when he went to Nashville to pitch the songs he had written. Rejection is a hard thing to take. Bill has approximately 100 copy written songs and with the help of AI, had turned several of them into very good country songs. In 2002, Bill married the second love of his life, Pam. We laughed every day. Bill Weldy was a kind, generous man with a wicked sense of humor. He touched the lives of everyone who knew him and he will be greatly missed.

A service to honor Bill's life will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, February 21, 2026 at Piqua Baptist Church with Pastor Jamie Wellman and Pastor Charles Wilkins officiating.
